Rory McIlroy found note from jailed ex-Masters champion in his locker before win -2025

Rory McIlroy finally captured the elusive Masters title in the early hours of Monday, completing his career Grand Slam after an 11-year pursuit. However, the day took an unexpected turn even before he hit the course.
Upon arriving at Augusta National, McIlroy discovered a note in his locker from Angel Cabrera. The message, offering him good luck, held special meaning—Cabrera had been McIlroy’s playing partner during the final round of the 2011 Masters. Reflecting on it, McIlroy said, “It was a nice gesture, and kind of ironic too. It’s been 14 years, but I finally got it done.”
Cabrera, who won the Masters in 2009, made his return to the tournament in 2025 after serving a 30-month prison sentence for assaulting two former partners. His participation sparked backlash from women’s rights advocates, but tournament chairman Fred Ridley stood by the decision to invite him, citing Cabrera’s status as a past champion and the fact that he had served his sentence.
Ridley emphasized the tournament’s disapproval of domestic violence but maintained Cabrera’s eligibility. Cabrera himself addressed the criticism, acknowledging his past mistakes and expressing a desire to make the most of his second chance. He admitted to a troubled period in his life and expressed remorse, but also emphasized the importance of moving forward.
Cabrera’s 2009 Masters win came after a dramatic playoff against Chad Campbell and Kenny Perry, and he remained competitive in 2011, the same year McIlroy famously collapsed in the final round despite a four-shot lead. Now, 14 years later, McIlroy has redeemed that painful memory by finally claiming the Green Jacket.
