On Friday, Woods announced the news on his social media accounts. This year, he participated in just five tournaments, and it’s thought that this is his sixth back operation overall.Tiger Woods underwent lumbar spine microdecompression surgery on Friday, as per a social media post, to address nerve impingement in his lower back.
The 48-year-old Woods underwent back surgery in West Palm Beach, Florida, on what is thought to be his sixth back procedure in the previous ten years. “I look forward to tackling the rehab and preparing myself to get back to normal life activities, including golf,” Woods said in a statement.
“The surgery went smoothly, and I’m hopeful this will help alleviate the back spasms and pain I was experiencing throughout most of the 2024 season.”Woods said that Dr. Sheeraz Qereshi of the Hospital for Special Surgery performed the surgery. This year, Woods participated in just five tournaments; at the Genesis Invitational, he withdrew after one round due to illness; at the Masters, he made the cut for the record 24 times in a row; at the PGA Championship, he finished 60th; and at the U.S. Open and British Open, he missed the cut.
Additionally, the 15-time major champion, who still struggles with injuries to his lower right leg from a serious car crash in February 2021, played in just 11 official rounds this year.Shortly before the car accident, in April 2017, Woods underwent a spinal fusion, which fused his lower spine, to address disc issues in his lower back. Less than a year later, he returned to competitive golf, winning the Tour Championship in 2018 and the Masters in 2019, his 15th major championship.
Later that year, he tied Sam Snead’s record with his 82nd PGA Tour victory, at the ZOZO Championship. Woods participated in activities at the Nexus Cup earlier this week, an event held at Liberty National in New Jersey in association with his TGR Foundation.
