Rory McIlroy was in attendance at the US Open semi-final between Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz last Friday, with tennis legend John McEnroe in the commentary booth.
John McEnroe took a brutal swipe at golf star Rory McIlroy after the Northern Irishman was spotted enjoying the US Open tennis semi-final following the end of his PGA Tour season.
McIlroy watched a tennis match at Arthur Ashe Stadium after his PGA Tour season ended. His presence was noticed on TV.
McEnroe made a comment about McIlroy’s 10-year major championship drought during the Open Championship. After his co-commentator mentioned that McIlroy had won three of golf’s four majors, McEnroe pointed out that it has been a while since his last significant triumph.
McEnroe exclaimed, “It has been a long time!” while McIlroy was seen drinking wine.
Adding insult to injury, the tennis icon joked about having some wine to help with the pain. McIlroy was close to winning a major at the US Open this summer, leading by two shots with five holes left.
McIlroy lost the title to Bryson DeChambeau by one stroke after finishing poorly with three bogeys in his last four holes. This was a tough loss for McIlroy, who left Pinehurst quickly after DeChambeau won.
He later announced he will take a three-week break from the PGA Tour. McEnroe brought up McIlroy’s recent close loss during a broadcast last Friday.
After struggling in the US Open, McIlroy had a disappointing end to his PGA Tour season, finishing ninth in the FedEx Cup rankings at the Tour Championship. Reflecting on his poor performance at Pinehurst earlier in the season, McIlroy spoke at East Lake after the post-season.
He mentioned that the season has been long and he plans to incorporate more breaks next year to avoid burnout. He started feeling fatigued after the US Open and is still experiencing some lingering exhaustion.”
